The Rolex Datejust ‘Zebra’ 116199SANR is one of the most distinctive and playful interpretations ever created within the Rolex Datejust. Introduced in 2007 at Baselworld and discontinued a decade later in 2017, the piece forms part of a rare series of animal-inspired designs produced by Rolex, alongside creations such as the SACO, Giraffe and Eye of the Tiger. While many of these expressive designs were produced within the Daytona range, this reference stands apart as a ladies’ Datejust. Its defining feature is the striking dial: a black background paved with diamonds arranged in a bold zebra pattern. Ten diamond dot hour markers frame the dial, with the Rolex crown at 12 o’clock and the signature date display at 3 o’clock replacing the remaining markers.
The 36 mm case is crafted entirely from 18k white gold and enhanced by diamond-set hooded lugs, reinforcing the watch’s jewellery-like character. A bezel set with 60 black sapphires creates a dramatic contrast against the brilliant diamonds of the dial, perfectly complementing the black rubber strap. Unusually for a rubber strap, it also features diamond setting and is secured with an 18k white-gold buckle, further highlighting the watch’s luxurious detailing; the piece is also accompanied by an additional strap. Inside, the watch is powered by the automatic calibre 3135, delivering reliable timekeeping with hours, minutes and date, along with a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. Combining high jewellery craftsmanship with the recognisable design language of Rolex, the Zebra is one of the brand’s most unconventional and collectible creations.
