The F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance ‘Parking Meter’ Ref. RT is one of the most distinctive interpretations of resonance in modern horology. Introduced in 2010 and produced until 2019, this platinum-cased 40 mm model earned its nickname from the left-hand 24-hour display, whose semi-jumping hour aperture and scrolling red minute track evoke the look of a traditional American parking meter. The asymmetrical dial is crafted in white gold with a silvered finish and features twin time displays that can be set independently, allowing for a dual time zone function. A traditional 12-hour display sits on the right, while a power reserve indicator between 11 and 12 o’clock tracks the remaining 42 hours of autonomy. Blued steel hands, polished steel bezels framing each time display, and the signature engraving above 6 o’clock reinforce the brand’s refined yet unconventional aesthetic, all housed in a slender 9.1 mm platinum case fitted to an alligator strap with a platinum pin buckle.
At its heart is the manually wound Calibre 1499.3 in 18k rose gold, a movement embodying the resonance principle first observed in 18th-century clocks by masters such as Abraham-Louis Breguet. The concept relies on two balances positioned in extremely close proximity, each with its own gear train, escapement, and power source; within approximately 7 to 10 minutes, the oscillations synchronize through resonance, enhancing chronometric stability as the rates counterbalance one another. F.P. Journe began researching resonance in the 1980s, bringing the first wristwatch version to market in 2000 through a subscription series that helped fund early 38 mm brass-movement models. The Ref. RT continues that legacy as the only asymmetrical Résonance configuration produced since the original release, combining technical ingenuity with a design language that is instantly recognizable among collectors.
