Roger Federer Shines with Rare Rolex Yacht-Master II at Documentary Premiere
When it comes to showcasing rare Rolex watches, few do it as consistently as Roger Federer. At the recent premiere of his documentary "Federer: Twelve Final Days," the tennis legend wore a Yacht-Master II ref. 226627.
The ref. 226627 isn't Rolex's first titanium watch—that title goes to the 50mm Deepsea Challenge, seemingly designed for James Cameron's deep-sea expeditions. However, the Yacht-Master II is arguably more appealing. With a more comfortable 42mm width, it was first seen on British sailor Sir Ben Ainslie's wrist in fall 2021. Now a full production model, it's crafted from Grade 5 RLX titanium and available for purchase.
What sets this Submariner-like watch apart from the Submariner? While they share similarities, there are key differences: the RLX titanium case, a 42mm size (versus the Sub's 41mm), a bidirectional timing bezel with a sand-blasted Cerachrom insert (instead of the Sub's unidirectional dive bezel), a date window (only on Submariner Date models), and a matching RLX titanium Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock folding clasp and Easylink comfort extension (unavailable for the Submariner).
Both the Submariner Date and the Yacht-Master II are powered by Rolex's automatic Calibre 3235 movement with a 70-hour power reserve and designed for aquatic use. The Submariner is a diver's watch with 300m water resistance, while the Yacht-Master II, made for sailing, is water-resistant to 100m—suitable for staying on deck.
Seeing the Yacht-Master II on Federer's wrist is more enjoyable than surprising—it complements his dark suit perfectly, despite being a sporty piece meant for rigorous use. As a Rolex ambassador, Federer has been seen wearing nearly every notable Rolex, from the Le Mans Daytona to the Sky-Dweller in precious metals. Although he looks great in a dressy 1908 with black tie, Rolex is renowned for its sport watches, fitting for one of the world's most famous athletes.
